In the summer of 1943 Jewish prisoners in Sobibor organised an underground group under the leadership of Leon Feldhendler, the former chairman of the Jewish Council in Zolkiew, in the hopes of staging an uprising and mass escape from the camp. When a group of Soviet Jewish POWs arrived at the camp in mid-September, one of their number, Lt. Aleksandr Pechersky was recruited by the underground and put in charge of the operation, with Feldhendler as his deputy. The uprising broke out on October 14, 1943, during which eleven SS guards were killed and three hundred prisoners escaped. All but approximately fifty were apprehended and killed.
